Pick the surface first

Most people know the look they want before they know the word for it. Start with the surface you would be happy to walk on barefoot in January, then work out the slab underneath it.

How a call here works

From the phone call to the pour

  1. You call or send the details

Roughly how big, what it is for, the finish you like and the suburb. A photo of the area helps more than anything.

  2. We ask the questions that change the price

Access for the truck, what is there now, any slope, any council crossover. Two minutes now saves a wasted site visit.

  3. One licensed concreter gets the job

Your details go to a single local concreter who covers your suburb. They contact you to measure up and quote.

  4. You decide

The quote is between you and the concreter. If it does not suit, you owe nobody anything.

What a good job includes

Questions worth asking any concreter

Concreting over $3,300 in Queensland is building work, and it needs a QBCC licence. Every concreter this line puts you onto holds one, and the number belongs on their quote. If it is not there, ask for it.

  • How thick, and what mesh?

A driveway that takes a ute every day is a different slab to a garden path. The quote should name the thickness and the reinforcement, not just the area.

  • Where does the water go?

Every slab needs a fall away from the house and somewhere for summer storm water to end up. Ask to see it marked out before the boxing goes in.

  • Where are the joints?

Concrete cracks. Control joints decide where. A good concreter will show you the joint layout and explain why it sits where it does.

Concrete on this coast

Why concrete on this coast is its own job

Hervey Bay is flat, sunny and close to salt water, and all three show up in concrete. The flat part means water does not leave a slab on its own: a driveway or patio needs a deliberate fall, and the summer storms that roll in off the bay will find every spot where the fall was guessed. The sun means pour timing matters. On a hot, still afternoon the surface can dry faster than the slab underneath, which is where surface crazing and a weak top layer come from, so early starts and proper curing are part of a good quote, not an extra.

The salt matters most along the Esplanade from Point Vernon round to Urangan. Airborne salt finds its way into anything porous, and the steel mesh inside a slab is what suffers if the cover over it is thin. That is one reason concrete near the water is worth a read before you sign anything.

Pick the finish, then the slab

Most people come to concrete wanting a look. Exposed aggregate is the most popular choice for driveways and pool areas because it grips when wet and hides the tyre marks a plain grey slab collects. Honed concrete gives a flatter, cleaner face for alfresco areas. Stencilled and coloured concrete covers the paver and cobble look without the weeds growing between pavers.

Under all of them sits the slab, and that part is not optional. A concrete driveway needs its thickness, mesh and joints matched to what drives on it. A shed slab has to suit the shed kit and its hold-down bolts. A house or extension slab is engineered work with inspections along the way.

How this site works

Hervey Bay Concreters is not a concreting company. It is a referral line. You describe the job, we ask the questions that decide the price, and the details go to one licensed concreter who works your part of the bay. They quote. You decide. Call 0489 955 511 on a weekday, or send the details through the form below.

Straight answers

Things people ask before a pour

Am I talking to the concreter when I call?

No. Hervey Bay Concreters is a referral line. We take the details, ask the questions that affect the price, and pass the job to one licensed local concreter who covers your suburb. They contact you, measure up and quote. The quote and the work are between you and them.

Does it cost anything to use this?

No. There is no charge to you for calling or sending the details. The concreter quotes the job, and if the quote does not suit you, you owe nobody anything.

Is the concreter licensed?

In Queensland, concreting work over $3,300 needs a QBCC licence. Every concreter this line passes jobs to holds one. The licence number should appear on their quote, and you can check it on the QBCC licence search before you sign.

How thick should a concrete driveway be?

It depends on what parks on it. A driveway for cars is a different slab to one that takes a caravan, boat or work truck. Rather than a single number, ask for the thickness and the mesh in writing on the quote, and tell the concreter about any heavy vehicles.

Do I need council approval for a new driveway crossover?

On roads controlled by Fraser Coast Regional Council, a new crossover needs a council permit and must be built to council's standard drawing. Repairing an existing crossover to the standard drawing does not need a permit. State-controlled roads are handled by Transport and Main Roads.

Will my new concrete crack?

Almost all concrete develops some hairline cracks as it shrinks and moves. Control joints are cut so that cracking happens in straight lines where it is meant to. Good preparation, the right mesh, sensible joint spacing and proper curing keep cracking to a minimum.

How long do I have to keep off new concrete?

As a rule of thumb, walking is usually fine after a day or so and cars after about a week, with concrete commonly reaching its design strength at around 28 days. Your concreter's advice for your slab comes first, because the mix and the weather change the timing.
